The Master of Arts (MA) in Special Education is designed for educators, related professionals, and qualified individuals interested in deepening their knowledge and research in special education practices and services. The program focuses on:
Global Trends: Exploring current issues and emerging trends in special education with a strong emphasis on social justice and ethical themes at various levels.
Theory & Research: Emphasizing developmentally oriented theory and research in cognitive and socio-emotional development.
Evidence-Based Practices: Using knowledge to design and implement evidence-based interventions and instructional practices to enhance learning.
Collaboration & Advocacy: Promoting collaboration and advocacy to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
Inclusive Learning: Supporting integrated and inclusive learning experiences for all children and youth.Students can choose between:
Specialized Approaches: Tailoring their study to all types of exceptional learners or
Concentrated Learning: Specializing in areas such as applied behavior analysis, mild/moderate disabilities, or other unique areas of study.Please note: This program does not lead to initial teacher certification in special education. Graduates of the Master of Arts (MA) in Special Education will be able to:
Assessment Practices: Use valid and reliable assessment methods to minimize bias.
Curriculum Improvement: Apply knowledge of general and specialized curricula to enhance programs, supports, and services at various levels (classroom, school, community, and system).
Program Facilitation: Drive continuous improvement of general and special education programs, supports, and services for individuals with exceptionalities.
Inquiry & Evaluation: Conduct, evaluate, and utilize inquiry to guide professional practice. Leadership: Provide leadership in setting goals, meeting high professional standards, advocating for effective policies, and creating positive work environments. Ethical Practice: Use foundational knowledge and ethical principles to inform special education practice, engage in lifelong learning, and advance the profession. Collaboration: Work with stakeholders to improve programs, services, and outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities and their families.
