At Benedictine University, we have over 40 years of demonstrated excellence in Nutrition. Founded in the sciences, our accredited Nutrition and Dietetics program (DPD) excels in areas of medical nutrition, wellness, and community health. To best prepare you for your career path, we immerse you in authentic experiences, including case studies, nutrition assessment, counseling, labs, and professional mentoring. Additional experiential opportunities include our study abroad nutrition course, research with faculty, and hands-on practice at worksites.

Our BS in Nutrition and Dietetics program meets national certification requirements, as those who complete the program have the opportunity to sit for the national exam to earn the credential DTR (Dietetic Technician, Registered).

As an undergraduate, in your senior year you are eligible to take 5000-level graduate courses in nutrition and public health.

Work in policy planning in public health agencies and health associations.
Develop and implement educational programs and events to improve the nutritional and health status of the community.
Work as a nutritionist health educator, health coach, fitness coach, or health promotion consultant in schools, health care facilities, corporations, wellness facilities or fitness setting.
Explore a career in food service as a manager of food services, food broker, or sales representative in restaurants, health care facilities, schools, or industry. Other related choices include quality control supervision and culinary education.
Supervise those delivering health promotion or education.
Develop a career as an author or editor of food and nutrition-related print media.
Use the bachelors degree in nutrition as the knowledge foundation to a enter Medical, Chiropractic, or Nursing school.
With further study in chemistry, work in food science research for ingredient and product development.

Our DPD is one of six programs in Northern Illinois that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Students completing the DPD degree program are eligible to apply for acceptance into accredited Dietetic Internship programs.

After successful completion of the accredited Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics, you are eligible to take the Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) exam.

The undergraduate nutrition major provides a solid knowledge base for those who plan to enter Medical or Chiropractic Schools or pursue graduate school in Nutrition, Nursing, Exercise Physiology, or other allied health programs.

Successful completion of the combined Master / Dietetic Internship program qualifies one to sit for the registration examination to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

The BenU Didactic Program in Dietetics boasts a 100% Dietetic Internship placement match rate for the past 9 years. Our 5-year (2019-2023) exam pass rate is 100% for the Dietetic Technician Registered exam. Our 3-year (2022-2024) exam pass rate is 88.46% for the Registration Examination for Dietitians.

Nutrition and Dietetics
