The Composition Program at Webster University emphasizes contemporary concert music and songwriting. 🎹 Students are encouraged to explore various musical styles and technologies, including jazz, electronic, computer, and MIDI applications. 🎶 Faculty composers work closely with students, providing personalized mentorship. Numerous performance opportunities are available through ensembles and projects like the Webster New Music Ensemble, Student Songwriter Showcase, and the Wet Ink project. 🎤🎼

Students will complete core, performance, composition, and supportive courses, and choose one of two emphasis areas to tailor their studies. 🌟

Students with a Bachelor of Music in Composition, focusing on concert music, will:

  • Create Original Compositions: Conceptualize, develop, and complete original works for various media (acoustic, electronic, etc.), using melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and textural techniques acquired through study and experimentation. 🎼
  • Produce Professional Scores: Notate compositions clearly and accurately with music publishing software, producing high-quality scores and parts suitable for performance. 🖋️📜
  • Analyze Musical Works: Understand and analyze musical compositions in terms of structure, historical, and cultural context. 📚🎵
  • Enhance Compositional Skills: Demonstrate skills that support the compositional process, including conducting, instrumental or vocal performance, and musicianship. 🎻🎹
