In this major, students explore not only the aesthetic aspects of literature but also delve into the values, perspectives, and dynamics of various historical contexts ๐Ÿ“–. Through small classes and seminars, students have numerous opportunities to enhance their skills in literary analysis, critical writing, and oral expression ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ.

Exceptional student essays are chosen by faculty each spring to be published in our literary journal, The Mercury ๐Ÿ“ฐ.

For those particularly interested in dramatic literature, the Drama and Playwriting Emphasis is available exclusively at the St. Louis main campus ๐ŸŽญ.

  • Contextual Analysis ๐Ÿ“š:
    • Apply knowledge of historical, cultural, and genre contexts to analyze canonical works and major periods of American and British literature, as well as select lesser-known and global literary works.
  • Literary Analysis and Writing ๐Ÿ“:
    • Compose thesis-driven, textually-supported literary analyses using conventions of literary study, including close reading and adherence to MLA style.
  • Research and Documentation ๐Ÿ”:
    • Identify and evaluate appropriate research sources, incorporate these sources into well-documented writing, and formulate original arguments based on research.
